Due to recent global circumstances surrounding COVID-19, many employees have been advised to work remotely. This shift in working can generate some unique challenges. We’re here to provide tips on how you can stay focused, connect with your team and protect your health and wellbeing while you’re working from home.
Tip #1: Implement a routine
It can be easy to fall out of your daily routine when you’re working in the comfort of your own home. Although there may be a learning curve, it’s possible to create and maintain a productive work routine.
Take the steps you normally would to prepare for the day and create a clear separation between work and free time. Take your morning shower, have a healthy breakfast and dress as if you were going to the office.
Establish set working hours and lunch breaks and make a conscious effort to stick a daily plan.
Maintaining a consistent schedule will help with work-life balance and keep you on track.
Tip #2: Have a designated work area
Set up a designated working area when you’re working from home.
Take the necessary steps to remove yourself from potential distractions, such as the TV or pets so they don’t interfere with your schedule.
Workspace ergonomics are important for productivity and comfort, so make sure you have a comfortable desk and chair to use. Our wide range of office furniture can cater to your remote working needs.
Check that your dedicated workspace has plenty of air, light and room, especially when working for long periods of time.
Tip #3: Take small breaks
Remember to schedule breaks throughout the day, just as you would when working in an office setting.
Allow time morning tea and lunch breaks to keep you energised, engaged and productive, and to help offset fatigue.
Tip #4: Stay connected with your team
Plan meetings in advanced and schedule time slots throughout the day to connect with fellow employees and keep an open flow of communication. This will allow members of the team to ask questions, allocate tasks, review content, and flag any issues of concern.
Tip #5: Channel positive thinking
When working remotely, it’s important to do little things that will help you stay positive throughout the day.
Professor Nicolas Bloom, a TED Talk speaker on remote working, recommends that managers acknowledge the stress and frustration that may come with working from home, but also take on the role of the cheerleader and encourage their teams to maintain a positive outlook.
