In line with our commitment to work towards a more sustainable future, in November 2023, Winc became an Official Supporter of Planet Ark’s Seedling Bank.
The Seedling Bank provides grants to community groups for regeneration, urban greening and community projects around Australia. Over the last 12 months, 3,000+ seedlings have been passed on to five community groups as a result of Winc’s support. These are now being nurtured to become established trees, shrubs and native grasses, helping to absorb CO2, while also releasing oxygen into our atmosphere.
Did you know?
One tree absorbs between 10 and 40kg of CO2 per year on average. The act of planting and nurturing 3,000 trees can result in the absorption of up to 120 tonnes of C02 per year, once they reach maturity.
Here are the stories of how our 3,000 seedlings are making a difference.
Geographe Catchment Inc., Western Australia.
GeoCatch is a not-for-profit based in the Geographe Bay Catchment, which is 220 kilometres southwest of Perth. This group works to protect possum habitat through education and tree planting. On 2 June, 1,000 seedlings were planted, including infill canopy trees.
Ballarat Wildlife Rehabilitation & Conservation, Victoria.
The Ballarat Wildlife Rehabilitation & Conservation (BWRC) in Victoria received a grant for 400 seedlings. Together with year nine students from Mount Clear Secondary School, BWRC planted native trees and shrubs on a property at Mount Egerton.
Tloperi Sanctuary Revegetation Project, South Australia.
Over the past 14 years Tloperi Sanctuary Revegetation Project has planted over 80,000 seedlings on an 80-acre property, a RAMSAR listed wetland that is home to the critically endangered Orange Bellied Parrot and Cape Barren Geese. In July, they planted 1,000 more seedlings.
South Lismore Duck Pond, Landcare NSW.
On the edge of wetlands in Lismore prone to flooding, dedicated volunteers at the South Lismore Duck Pond continued their long-standing efforts by planting a variety of sedges and rushes to help improve water health. Along the wetland edges, they introduced robust native species that can withstand flood conditions, contributing to the resilience of the area. Around 450 seedlings were planted there in July 2024.
Tamar Valley Steiner School.
Students at Tamar Valley Steiner School in Tasmania have planted 300 native Tasmanian trees, shrubs and grasses. The project also provides an opportunity for students from kindergarten to grade 6 to become familiar with native plant species and the wildlife they attract.
Events supported by Planet Ark’s Seedling Bank take place all year round. However, ‘Schools Tree Day’ (25 July) and ‘National Tree Day’ (27 July) are great occasions to get involved.
Here’s how to apply for a seedling grant from Planet Ark’s Seeking Bank.
Winc is partnering with Planet Ark and the Seedling Bank once again in 2025. Over the next 12 months, another five community groups will plant 2,300 seedlings donated by Winc.
