How to get the most out of your physical diary

There’s nothing better than starting a new, clean, and crisp physical diary, with the intent of writing down your tasks, deadlines, and goals. We asked Mary Chirgwin, Acting Category Manager – Office Products at Winc, for her best advice on how to make the most of your physical diary.

Select the right diary for you

“There are so many different types of diaries on the market – daily, weekly and monthly overviews – so it’s critical that you choose the one that best suits your needs,” advises Mary.

Diaries give you a variety of options to choose from and leave you with plenty of space for brainstorming, planning and note-taking so that writing down goals and to-do lists can keep you inspired and motivated.

“My top recommendation: the best diary is one that is simple to use and makes you feel confident about organising your work life.”

Use a colour coding system

Did you know that colour coding can help make your schedule more effective?

“The best part about having a physical diary is that you get to be as creative as you can. Tailor your diary to your personality and start a colour coding system to help you stay on top of your priorities,” says Mary.

“A useful tip is to highlight your tasks using the colours you’ve chosen. This will assist your mind to more efficiently distinguish different tasks and make you feel less overwhelmed by your work activities.”

Plan your leave

According to Mary, keeping a physical diary has its benefits beyond just planning for work-related tasks.

“Scheduling your leave dates is arguably the best way to make the most out of your physical diary. You can also use it to include casual reminders about upcoming leave to maintain a positive outlook. For instance, incorporating weekly countdowns into your diary can serve as a motivational tool to keep you focused and on track,” says Mary.

Keep it open

By keeping your planner open on your desk throughout the day you maintain a constant visual reminder of your tasks, enhancing your productivity.

“One of the major advantages is that you can keep it always open on your desk, serving as a constant reminder and motivation. It can be the first thing you see in the morning, helping you start your day productively. Additionally, a diary helps you to immediately cross items off your to-do list, providing a sense of accomplishment as you make progress,” suggests Mary.

Be a visual planner

If you enjoy visualising and brainstorming ideas, as well as taking notes and jotting down thoughts throughout the day, then a physical diary is perfect for you.

“It’s a convenient tool for writing down casual notes during online meetings or capturing spur-of-the-moment ideas,” recommends Mary.
